Building Self-Confidence… the Easy Way

Building self-confidence isn’t about being perfect — it’s about learning to be kind to yourself along the way. As a teen, you’re often comparing yourself to others or feeling unsure about who you are. The good news? Self-compassion can help you grow more confident and feel better about yourself.

First, talk to yourself like you would to a close friend. If you mess up on a test or say something awkward, don’t be harsh. Instead, remind yourself, “It’s okay. Everyone makes mistakes.” Be supportive, not critical. Remember, nobody’s perfect, and that’s totally normal.

We All Have Doubts

It’s also important to realize that everyone has doubts — even those who look confident. Confidence isn’t about never feeling nervous; it’s about trusting yourself enough to keep going despite those feelings. When you’re feeling insecure, remember that everyone feels insecure sometimes. Say to yourself, “It’s normal to feel this way. I can handle it and move forward.” Listen to a podcast about how Molly Seidel, an Olympic medalist, struggles with her own self-doubt.

And then try to catch yourself when comparing yourself to others — instead, focus on what makes you unique and celebrate your own wins, big or small.

Be Patient with Yourself

Most importantly, be patient with yourself. Building confidence takes time. Every small step, every kind word you say to yourself, makes a difference. Self-compassion isn’t a one-time thing — it’s something you practice every day.

So be gentle, be patient. With time and kindness, you’ll see your confidence grow stronger each day.

Listen to some of the stories from teens and young adults who also struggle with self-confidence, and how learning how to be more self-compassion has helped.
